Do you know that Indiana has had 2 Constitutions?

Do you know that the first Constitution allowed every 12 years the public to be consulted by poll to decide if the Indiana Constitution should be replaced?  Between 1816 and 1849 the public voted five times against replacing or amending the constitution, generally by large margins.

Do you know that in the 1840s due to overspending Indiana became insolvent?  This was a leading factor in the public voting to reform the Constitution.

The new constitution was written in several different sections. When the constitution was submitted to the public to vote for, they could vote on each section, meaning that all, part, or none of the constitution could be approved.

On November 1, 1851, Indiana's new Constitution took effect.
